There is a famous mountain called Mt. Koya where you can stay overnight in a Buddhist Temple. There are 52 'Shukubo' in Mt. Koya. You will experience the taste of Buddhist vegetarian Cuisine, Zazen "seated meditation" and other life in the Buddhist Temple. Mt. Koya is where the Shingon Buddhism was founded by Kukai and famous as a sanctuary. There are 117 temples in Mt. Koya. Among others, "Okunoin" is a special and mystical place. Before crossing the little footbridge to "Okunoin", put the hands together and make a bow. Thousand of years, people believe "Okunoin" is a spiritual land that leads the spirits to the Heaven. People (either Buddhist or Non Buddhist) started to build cenotaphs here praying their loved one goes to the Heaven and for happiness in the next life. There are many big cenotaphs for Historically famous and important people in Japan.
