Akita Yomemi Matsuri

Yomemi Matsuri is a local festival of Akita which literally translates to "Bride-seeing Festival". The festival takes place at Hie Shrine of Noshiro City in Akita usually in May. Yomemi Matsuri has gradually changed the people it celebrates through the years. In the beginning, before the Showa period, people gathered to Hie Shrine believing it housed powers of love and relationships and prayed for their happiness. In the early Showa days, new brides and unmarried younger women dressed up and visited the shrine but around the 1960s, shrine visitors became restricted to brides who had just gotten married within the past year. These new brides came to thank the Gods of the shrine for their new found love and prayed for their happiness. Recently, more unmarried women have been seen participating in Yomemi Matsuri once again.
