Red Brick Warehouse, Hakodate | Japan Deluxe Tours

The Red Brick Buildings

Previously used only as warehouses, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses now constitute a commercial facility of red brick buildings holding restaurants, shops, art museums, meeting halls, and more in Hokkaido. Originally built in 1887 as a sales warehouse, the Kanemori Warehouse district expended with the development of a thriving shipping industry. Changes to the form of ocean shipping during the late Showa period resulted in a shrinking warehouse industry, resulting in the shifting change of the old warehouse district. The warehouses were switched from their original use of storage to instead serve as a commercial facility. Although the original buildings were destroyed by fire, they were rebuilt in 1909 and stand to this day.

The facility is split into four sections, the BAY Hakodate, Kanemori Yobutsukan, Hakodate History Plaza, and the Kanemori Hall. Guests of the area can enjoy various shopping and dinning choices, as well as exhibits and information about Hokkaido. Unlike the streets of Kyoto, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses have a Western feel mixed with Japanese culture. Spend some time shopping at this enjoyable warehouse district as we make a stop along the way with our fully-inclusive line of Hokkaido Japan Tour Packages available May through December! The Red Brick Buildings
