Previously used only as warehouses, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses now constitute a commercial facility of red brick buildings holding restaurants, shops, art museums, meeting halls, etc. Originally built in 1887 as sales warehouses, they later expanded with the development of the shipping industry. Changes to the form of ocean shipping in the late Showa period resulted in a shrinking warehouse industry, and the view of the warehouses changed to one in which they were seen as valuable structures that could be used effectively, and in 1988 it was transformed into a commercial facility. The original buildings were destroyed by fire, but were rebuilt in 1909.
