Toyama Bay | Firefly Squids Light Up the Bay

Toyama Bay is famous for its firefly squids that light up the bay. The bioluminescent squids emit blue light with its unique light producing organs called photophores. The squids have thousands of these photophores on their bodies which allows the squid's entire body to light up.

During the months of March though May, millions of firefly squids are brought to the surface by large waves, which is also when the squids are spawning, attracting even more squids. This creates a big light show of millions of firefly squids glowing and lighting up the bay. Tourists from all over the world come to Toyama Bay in hopes of witnessing this phenomenon. Boats at Toyama Bay leave early morning around 3am to catch it in time for when the fishermen pull in their nets as the squids flow in blue. The lights flash on and off creating a beautiful light show.
