Chusonji Temple is a historic temple in the town of Hiraizumi that is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This sacred temple, famous for its entirely gilded Konjikido (Golden Hall), offers visitors a glimpse into the refined culture and religious practices of the Heian period.
Konjikido, which represents the treasures and cultural assets of Chusonji Temple, is the only structure that retains the appearance of the 12th century when Hiraizumi was the political center of the Tohoku region (Oshū, now most of the Tohoku region). It is known as the only structure that preserves the appearance of Hiraizumi when it was the political center of the Tohoku region (Oshu, now most of the Tohoku region) in the 12th century.
Konjikido was built in 1124 by Fujiwara no Kiyohira, the founder of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. Although Konjikidō has suffered many crises of destruction, almost 90% of the structure and components used in Konjikidō since its construction still exist, thanks to the solidarity of the temple priests and various assistance, protection, and restoration over the years from the government and authorities of the time. In other words, even after nearly 1,000 years, it has remained as it was in bygone days!
Chusonji Temple has many other historical buildings and exhibits besides Konjikido, so come and see for yourself!
