Iga Ueno Castle | White Phoenix Castle

Ueno Castle, formally known as Iga Ueno Caslte, was constructed in 1585 under Takigawa Katsutoshi. His successors reconstructed the honmaru, the innermost bailey, with walls 98 ft high, making Ueno Castle's honmaru the tallest in Japan. 50 years later, the castle was destroyed due to strong high winds. The castle though was no longer deemed of great significance though, and was not rebuilt until many centuries later in 1935 when a local resident funded for the reconstruction of the castle. During the reconstruction, only wood was used to achieve a look as close to the original castle as possible, unlike many other castles which used concrete during recent reconstructions. Iga Ueno Castle is also known as Hakuho or White Phoenix Castle for its beautiful architecture.
