Toriten is a local dish of Oita and is simply tempura-style Japanese fried chicken. Bite-sized pieces of chicken are marinated in a sauce made of soy sauce, sake, and garlic powder before they are covered in tempura powder and deep fried. Toriten can use any part of the chicken to create mouth-watering pieces of delicious Toriten.
When exploring Oita, toriten can be purchased at many restaurants and markets. Toriten is a very popular dish in Oita Prefecture and is believed to have first been served in a restaurant at Oita City. Some claim Toriten's origins are from Beppu, but either way toriten is loved in Oita. however, there is a bit of a misconception from the people of Oita that toriten is enjoyed nationwide. Outside of Oita, toriten is not as popular or as known as the regular karaage.
