Kamakura | Kyoto of Eastern Japan

Kamakura is a very popular tourst destination, often called the "Kyoto of Eastern Japan" thanks to numerous temples, shrines, and other beautiful historical monuments. Located by relaxing beaches and the sea, Kamakura is a haven of peace and quiet that feels as if you've stepped back in time to a simpler era. Known as the cultural and political capital of Japan between 1192 to 1333, Kamakura is a treasure trove of eccentric temples and interesting shrines. One of the most famous and revered sights in Kamakura is the big Buddha meditating calmly under the trees. While Todaiji Temple is also known for it's big Buddha, the one in Kamakura has survived fire, floods, tidal waves, typhoons, and even the great earthquake of 1923. While the Buddha does show signs of wear, there are still thousands of tourists visiting every year to snap photos while cherry tress bloom and appreciate the serene gaze over the surrounding hills. The cherry blossom flowers enhance the natural beauty and make the Big Buddha one of Kamakura's most can't miss travel destinations in Japan.

Kamakura's most important shrine - Tsurugaoka Hachimangu

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura's most important shrine, founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063. The shrine was later expanded and moved to it's current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government. The shrine became the political center of Eastern Japan when Yoritomo chose the city as the seat for his new military government in 1192. The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and revered by the samurai. The deified spirits of the ancient Emperor Ojin is identified with the Hachiman Shrine, and the Empress Jingu and Emperor Chuai are enshrined in the main buildings.
