Featured Destination on our Anime Japan Tours vacation series.
Acting as an alternate to the hustle and bustle that is Akihabara, Nakano Broadway is an indoor shopping complex located in Nakano, Tokyo. Dubbed the "sacred place of Otaku Culture", there are around 100 shops selling manga, magazines, anime collectors' items, figures, idol merchandise, game consoles & accessories, video games, animation and idol related CD's & DVDs, and other great otaku anime/manga related goods (doujin, pins, etc.). There's also the Mandarake flagship anime store with multiple sub-branches scattered around the shopping complex. Each sub-branch features different specialties, such as character figures, posters & tapestries, cosplay goods, plushies, and more.
Nakano Broadway is also the perfect destination to find an incredible line-up of vintage anime goods. While stores like Animate are stocked with the latest goods to match the anime season, the shops in Nakano Broadway is an excellent escape to find classics like Yu-Yu Hakasho, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, & Neon Genesis Evangelion. While some of the stores will carry "second-hand" goods, you shouldn't mistaken that to mean they will be damaged or of lower quality. Apart from Mandarake, there are other stores to fill whatever your inner otaku desires. In case you get a bit overwhelmed by all the anime, head east to Furea Road and grab a bite to eat at one of the cafés. If Akihabara represents Tokyo's anime industry of today, Nakano Broadway is the gathering of timeless anime characters & manga/comic classics.
If you're looking for an extra sweet treat while shopping at Nakano Broadway, Japan Deluxe Tours highly recommends the popular ice-cream store Daily Chico for an epic, Instagram-worthy treat. Located in the basement level of Nakano Broadway, this dessert restaurant offers an incredible 8-layer ice-cream cone. This delight consists of strawberry, chocolate, mocha, vanilla, melon, grape, matcha green tea, and ramune ice-cream sitting carefully on crunchy cake cone. We also recommend bringing some napkins and take your Instagram photos quick before the treat melts.
