Featured Destination on Osaka Anime Street Festa (Nipponbashi Street Festa)

Osaka's Nipponbashi is a popular shopping district formerly known as Nagamachi. Although written with the same characters as Nihonbashi in Tokyo (日本橋), the distinctive difference in pronunciation is the "hon" vs "ppon" between Tokyo and Osaka, respectively. Often referred to as Den Den Town (or Denki no Machi), Nipponbashi is famous for attracting foreign travelers for shopping thanks to the negotiable prices, and for having many tax/duty free retailers. There are numerous large electronic retailers in the area, in addition to maid cafes, massage and beautician services, restaurants, cafes, and bars to keep visitors satisfied any time of day.

Nipponbashi is also popular destination among anime fans. Like Akihabara in Tokyo, Nipponbashi is the anime central in Osaka. Specialty stores such as figures, anime goods, and plastic models are concentrated on the street called "Ota Road," which is a pilgrimage place for pop culture in the western Japan.

Once a year, this Ota Road and Denden Town area transform into the site of a cosplay festival “ Osaka Anime Street Festa (Nipponbashi Street Festa)”. Considered a preliminary for those looking to participate in the World Cosplay Summit anime event. The road is closed off and reserved for pedestrians and stalls, with many cosplay artists parading down the open street. Photos are welcome, and guests are encouraged to join in the cosplay fun.
