Osaka's Nipponbashi is a popular shopping district formerly known as Nagamachi. Although written with the same characters as Nihonbashi in Tokyo (日本橋), the distinctive difference in pronounciation is the
ppon between Tokyo and Osaka respectively. Often referred to as Den Den Town (or Denki no Machi), Nipponbashi is famous for attracting foreign travelers for shopping thanks to the negotiable prices, and for having many tax/duty free retailers. There are numerous large electronic retailers in the area, in addition to maid cafes, massage and beautician services, restaurants, cafes, and bars to keep visitors satisfied any time of day.
Nipponbashi is also popular destination among anime fans. Like Akihabara in Tokyo, Nipponbashi is the anime central in Osaka. Animate Nipponbashi is a large shopping mall specializing in anime and character goods. The first floor sells an enormous selection of manga, sure to have your favorite manga comics. Move on up to the second floor where the character goods from your favorite manga and anime are being displayed and sold. For those who want to become the character themselves, Animate has cosplay costumes available to wear. While there' is the Gundam Base in Tokyo, Nipponbashi is home to a two-story Gundam outlet. There's also other popular otaku shops like Mandarake and Tora no Ana. If you plan to do some extra anime souvenir shopping done, the selection of anime goods at Nipponbashi is bound to be the best you'll find in all of Osaka.
