Lake Chuzenji | Formed by a Natural Dam of Lava
Lake Chuzenji has been selected as "one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan". It was formed by a natural dam of lava from the crater of Mt. Nantai about 20,000 years ago. The shape of the lake is oval and surrounded by thickly wooded hills. Due to its extraordinary depth, the deepest point measuring 161.5m, it does not freeze even in winter. The temperature on the lake-side seldom exceeds 25 degrees (centigrade) in summer. So it is a popular with foreign diplomats stationing in Tokyo. Many foreign villas, including embassies of various countries, were built on the shores which developed as an international summer resort from the Meiji era to the early Showa era. Those historic buildings still remain. The lake abounds in fish such as rainbow trout and carp. Fishing, yachting and boating are favorite sports on the lake among men and women of all ages.
