Etiquette Rules for Taking Off Shoes

If you have a chance to visit someone’s house in Japan please remember to take off your shoes at the entrance of the house, even on Western style carpet or wooden floor. Japanese entrances are often made more spacious than popular American style houses for this reason. When you take off your shoes, be mindful to not turn your buttocks toward another person, for this is considered rude by most Japanese. Please place your shoes with the toes toward the door, both shoes side by side. Mastering these etiquette rules will make you a courteous house guest.
