Do you know Maiko? I assume that everyone knows Maiko as a Geisha. The Geisha is a traditional female entertainer and the Maiko is an apprentice Geisha age between 15 and 20. Why they paint their face white?? There are several rumors. 1. The rouge and the white make up powder were super expensive back in the old time. Using expensive products symbolizes their wealth and the power. 2. A fair complexion compensates for a facial defect or two. The best theory is..... 3. About 300 years ago, they had to perform under the dim candlelight. Painting face white was the best way to showcase their beauty in the dark. In the Maiko & Geisha's world, there are so many strict rules and meanings. They MUST learn a special Kyoto dialect. The first year of apprentice, they rouge only lower lip. They all have different hair style, the color of the collar, the length of the OBI (the belt), ornamental hairpins depends on their years of experience. The Kimono that they wear is very long and they hold the hem with their left hand when they walk. This gesture stops any hands go under the Kimono and suggests men that "We offer you our performance, but we DO NOT sell our body!" After a long , tough and strict practice, Maiko becomes a Geisha. If they want to marry, they must quit. So if you see a Maiko or Geisha, please respect them!
