Odori Park is located in the center of Sapporo and stretches east to west, dividing the city into northern and southern sections. Odori means
large street in Japanese and is fitting for this park that was originally supposed to be a street. Comprised of 13 blocks, there's plenty for families to enjoy on the park grounds including statues, playground equipment, and flower gardens. Although initially founded as a street, the area did not thrive and was eventually converted into a flower garden, and then a larger park. There are many events held at the street in addition to prominent landmarks, including the famous Sapporo TV Tower.
One of the most popular events in the winter is the Sapporo Snow Festival, where extravagant sculptures are made in an epic competition. The winter also popular thanks to the White Illumination event that lights the trees with bright, colorful lights. In addition to winter events, there is the Lilac Festival in the Spring, a traditional Japanese Yosakoi dance festival in June, and a beer garden in the summer run by Sapporo Breweries and major breweries. The end of summer includes the annual Hokkaido Marathon and the popular Autumn Festival which includes a three week showcases for food stalls by restaurants from Hokkaido and all Japan. The park is also home to the summer's Flower Carpet Event, a community event that draws thousands to plant decorative Japanese flowers in Odori Park.
This expansive park draws in massive crowds during the festivals, but is enjoyed year round by the residents of Sapporo. The numerous flower gardens are only enhanced during the cherry blossom season, when Hokkaido is graced by numerous pink and white flower petals. Odori Park is home to a cherry trees and brings in crowds for the Spring hanami. If you plan on visiting Sapporo during your next vacation, Japan Deluxe tours highly recommends adding a day trip to Odori Park.
