Oita Beppu Spa | The Sea Hell, The Blood Pond Hell & The Tornado Hell

The Tour of Hell along the Kannawa area is one of the most popular attractions for sightseeing in the Beppu Spa. While the water in Beppu is normally appreciated for it's relaxing qualities, the water at the various Hell's (地獄, jigoku) are intended for sightseeing. Famous for eight spots, our Japan tours through Kyushu visit three of the Hell's in Beppu.

    The 8 Hell's
  1. Umijigoku - Beautiful Sea Hell noted for the cobalt blue waters.
  2. Chi-no Ike Jigoku - The Blood Pond Hell noted for the dark red water.
  3. Oniishi Bozu Jigoku - Named after the mud bubbles, this pond looks like the shaven heads of monks and features a relaxing foot bath.
  4. Yama Jigoku - Mountain Hell
  5. Kamado Jigoku - Cooking Pot Hell noted for several boiling ponds and a flashy demon statue. The water is edible and there are snacks cooked from the steam nearby.
  6. Oniyama Jigoku - Demon Mountain Hell where large crocodiles are bred and kept on site.
  7. Shiraike Hell - White Pond Hell noted for hot, milky white waters nd surrounded by a charming garden.
  8. Tatsumaki Jigoku - Tornado Hell noted by geyser eruptions every 10 minutes.

Our Southern Japan Tours and Grand Tour Packages include time exploring the Sea Hell made up of bright cobalt blue hot water, the Blood Pond Hell where hot water containing red melted clay gushes out, and the Tornado Hell to see the fiery geyser erupts. The Tour of Hell also sells onsen eggs (eggs boiled in the hot springs) similar to the Black Eggs of Owakudani and their famous Hell Steamed Pudding, both popular among visitors.
