Oita's Hell Steamed Pudding | Famous Beppu Dessert

Hell Steamed Puddings are unique custard puddings sold in Beppu, Oita. The puddings are made from typical ingredients like milk, eggs, sugar and fresh cream, but are cooked using the volcanic steam from Oita's famous hot springs. While many wonder why the puddings called Hell Steamed at first, the scary name is inspired from Beppu's famous eight hot-spring Hell ponds. Using the steam from these special hot-springs, the locals are able to create a deliciously sweet pudding known as Jigoku Purin or Hell-Steamed Puddings.

In addition to pudding, there are other Hell-steamed foods available in Oita. Some include seasonal vegetables, seafood, chicken, eggs, steamed pork buns, and more. Restaurants serving hot-spring steamed foods often use buffet-like timer system to let guests enjoy as much as they want during an allotted time. While Hell-steamed pudding may be the most popular of the steamed choices, Oita offers great specialties and meals unique in all Japan!
