Hakone | Taste the Sulfurous Black Egg

Owakudani is a famous crater and a popular tourist spot in Hakone. Much of the area is in an active volcanic zone filled with sulfurous fumes and hot springs. From Owakudani, there is a cable car visitors can ride to get better views of the mountains. On a clear day, Owakudani is a great spot to view and take pictures of Mt. Fuji. In addition to riding the cable car, eating Kuro-Tamago or black eggs are a popular Owakudani past-time. The eggs are hard boiled in the hot-springs, resulting in the black color from the sulfur. These eggs are so healthy, eating one is said to add seven years to your life. Only available in Owakudani, these eggs are a popular souvenir for domestic and international travelers alike.
