Featured Destination on our Cherry Blossom Japan Tours vacation series.
Owakudani is a famous volcanic crater and popular tourist spot in the hot-springs town of Hakone. Much of the area is in an active volcanic zone filled with sulfurous fumes and hot spring waters. From Owakudani, there is a rope-way ride visitors can use to get better views of the surrounding mountains.
On a clear day, Owakudani is a great spot to view and take pictures of Mt. Fuji. As long as the clouds aren't covering the view, Owakudani is one of the best places next to the Fuji Five Lakes area to see the iconic mountain.
In addition to riding the rope-way, eating a Kuro-Tamago or black eggs are a popular Owakudani past-time. The eggs are hard boiled in the local hot-springs, resulting in the exterior black color from the sulfur. These eggs are so healthy, it is believed that eating one can add up to seven years to your life. Only available in Owakudani, these eggs are a popular souvenir for domestic and international travelers alike.
