Sagano is located to the northwest of the Kyoto Basin, covering an area of 16 km². Home to the famous bamboo groves, Sagano is close to the city center while retaining it's natural environment. Originally an area for hunting and relaxing for the Emperor and Omiya people during the Heian Period, Sagano is home to many temples and shrines including Nonomiya Shrine, Tenryu-ji Temple, and Gioji Temple. When visiting Sagano, it's often recommended to ride the scenic Sagano Romantic Train.
