Sagano

Sagano is located to the northwest of the Kyoto Basin, covering an area of 16 km². Home to the famous bamboo groves, Sagano is close to the city center while retaining it's natural environment. Originally an area for hunting and relaxing for the Emperor and Omiya people during the Heian Period, Sagano is home to many temples and shrines including Nonomiya Shrine, Tenryu-ji Temple, and Gioji Temple. Be sure to take a Rickshaw ridethrough the bamboo forest and the rest of Sagano.

When visiting Sagano, it's often recommended to ride the scenic Sagano Romantic Train. This train is outfitted with nostalgic features like wooden benches for passengers to enjoy while riding through the mountains for charming views of the scenery. The ride takes about 25 minutes The yellow and red train is most popular during the autumn months, when visitors of Sagano come to appreciate the fall foliage.
