Located in the Tochigi Prefecture just north of Tokyo is Nikko, a popular tourist destination for local and international travelers. Forming part of the Nikko National Park, this area is famous for the heritage shrine, temple, scenic slopes, lakes, National Park, hot springs, and waterfalls. The Toshogu Shrine in Nikko is arguably the prefectures most famous shrine, designated as a world heritage site. The Toshogu Shrine is where Tokugawa Ieyasu, a famous Shogun from the Edo Period in the 17th century, was worshiped after his death. Ieyasu's grandson, the third Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, reconstructed the shrine, giving it the luxurious and elaborate design that we see today. The engravings on the Yomei-mon gate are especially marvelous decorated in gorgeous, luxurious colors. Be sure to take a picture with the three monkeys that represent: See no Evil, Hear no Evil, & Speak no Evil.
Nikko is also well known for Kegon Falls, one of Japan's top three waterfalls known for it's height and dynamic elevation change. The water falls from approximately 100m (350ft) in height for a spectacular view. Visitors can explore the bottom of the gorge with an elevator to get a special view from beind the waterfalls. The view from behind is just as breathtaking as from afar. Just north of Nikko is Lake Chuzenji, one of the many lakes that captures Japan's beauty. Lake Chuzenji was formed after Mt. Nandai erupted about 20,000 years ago. The lava flowed into Daiyagawa River to form the lake, surrounded by nature.
