Kurama Onsen is a hot-spring located on the mountain side of Kyoto. The open air baths are surrounded by the scenery for a tranquil and relaxing experience. Unwind in the hydrogen sulfide rich water that is said to help with neurosis, rheumatism, diabetes, skin and lumbago. Guests who stay in Kurama Onsen can enjoy the hot-springs included in their stay, but Kurama Onsen also offers day-trip options for visitors. Guests can choose from two courses, the indoor baths or the scenic open-air baths outside. If you do plan on doing a day trip, it's worth noting that towels and yukata are not included. However, you can rent a locker (requires a 100 yen coin), shower, soap, shampoo and hair dryer.
If you plan on visiting Kurama Onsen, we recommend visiting both the indoor and outdoor baths. The indoor baths feature more extras, where as the outdoor bath is a great way to relax with views of Kyoto's mountains. We also recommend trying the coffee offered at the hot-spring buildings, as they are made with the famous waters at the foot of Mt. Kurama. The waters of Kurama are well regarded as high quality, and is definitely a great stop for onsen fans looking for an excellent hot-spring option in Kyoto.
