Kyoto Station is one of the largest railway stations in the world with perhaps has one of the most striking architectural designs, a striking contrast between technology and the rich traditional history/culture Kyoto is known for. Keeping in line with a futuristic feel of the station, there are multiple areas in the station that sport light up illumination shows that visitors can enjoy as they explore the area.
Each illumination spot is located on a different floor of the station. The 10th floor features the Star Bridge, an illumination that is situated on an aerial path that offers a panoramic view of the cityscape on the northside of Kyoto. The structure around the aerial path adds to the scenic view, particularly at night where it looks as if you are looking out of a space station. Even after 20 years, the futuristic atmosphere and city charm has not faded.
The Luna Garden is located on the 7th floor and makes use of the walls along the East Plaza section. As the name suggests, these illuminations focus on flowers and plants that are designed in unique shapes to fit the concept of a Botanical Garden of Light. The vibrant and colorful scenery evokes a fairy tale like environment sure to delight any visitor.
Located on the 4th floor and 1st floor respectively, the Graphic Illumination Plus and Tokimeki Project are perhaps the highlights of the building’s attractions. Both utilizing the grand staircases, these two illuminations when viewed from the bottom of the staircases offer a grand show as they span several dozen stairs. Both lights offer different illumination designs based on the seasons or events, making each visit unique and different. It is also a way for various companies in Kyoto to work together in order to design and produce these light shows.
