The Harajuku Yosakoi Dance Festival is one of many yosakoi festivals held throughout Japan. Yosakoi is a form of dance originating from Kochi prefecture in Shikoku, characterized by it's high energy and large group of dancers all following a specific choreography. The dance and festival itself is relatively new compared to many other festivals with the first Yosakoi Dance festival being held in 1954. Despite being recently created, relatively speaking, the yosakoi has gained popularity throughout Japan as well as internationally. The Harajuku Yosakoi Festival is a 2-day festival taking place among 5 locations in the Harajuku area where teams of dancers will fill the streets along with floats as well. This specific festival has been held annually since 2001 and with the enormous popularity of yosakoi, there are no signs of stopping any time soon.
