Fukui | Temple of Eternal Peace

Eiheiji Temple was founded in 1244 by Buddhist scholar Dogen Zenji. Zenji is credited for introducing Soto Zen to Japan. Eiheiji Temple is one of the two head temples of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism. Eiheiji means "temple of eternal peace" in English. Even today the temple is an active monastery with over 100 practicing monks. Those wishing to experience a day in the life of a monk can do so by staying overnight at the temple and following the monks' daily routines including zen meditation.
