Odawara Castle was first built in the beginning of the 15th century when the Omori family advanced into Odawara province. After it became the residence of a feudal lord, the Odawara Hojo Family in 1495, it was gradually expanded as the central base dominating the Kanto area. It developed into the largest castle of medieval times in Japan when a large outer fence surrounding the castle town was completed in preparation for the attack of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
