Japanese Fried Chicken | Karaage

Karaage is Japanese fried chicken, but unlike the western fried chicken, karaage is served as small, bite-sized pieces. The chicken is cut into smaller pieces and marinated in soy sauce, sake, ginger, garlic, and other ingredients depending on the chef's preference. The Japanese fried chicken dish is then marinated by a powder mixture of flower, corn starch, and some salt, before being deep fried until crispy and a nice brown color. Karaage powder is also sold, which can be used by itself to marinate instead of having to mix flour and corn starch.

Karaage is very popular among children and continuously ranks as one of the top children's favorite foods. Karaage also serves as a great appetizer and is available at many izakaya. As like any other fried food, karaage is best enjoyed when it is hot and crispy with a hint of lemon juice. Karaage and beer is also a great combination and can easily be purchased together from a local convenience store.
