White Day is March 14th and is an answer day to Valentine's Day. On this day, men who received chocolate from women on Valentine's Day show their gratitude and love by presenting the women with gifts. It was customary to give women white chocolate, but nowadays cookies, jewelry, and generally any kind of gift is acceptable. In Fukuoka, a confectionery based company campaigned to spread giving marshmallows as White Day gifts and tried to nickname the day Marshmallow Day. Although Marshmallow Day did not spread nationwide, or even outside Fukuoka, some men may present marshmallows as gifts.
A term sanbae gaeshi
is sometimes used on White Day. Sanbae gaeshi literally means return in triple amount, which refers to the idea that men's White Day gifts to women should be three times the Valentine's Day gift they received a month prior. Given the amount of effort that used to go into making chocolate by hand for Valentine's Day, men should show their appreciation by doing something just as grand.
