Yamaguchi Hofu Tenman-gu | Oldest Tenmangu Shrine

Hofu Tenman-gu is a Shinto shrine in Yamaguchi. The shrine was founded in 904 and is known as “Japan’s first Tenmangu shrine”. Hofu Tenman-gu is dedicated to Tenjin, the Shinto kami of scholarship. Hofu Tenman-gu is considered one of the three top Tenmangu shrines, shrines with focus on academic success, along with Kitano in Kyoto and Dazaifu in Fukuoka.
